Why is it hard to track household bills?

Because every bill comes from a different company on its own schedule, and prices can change in between. By the time you spot it, you may already be paying the new rate.

A pay on time discount or an introductory internet price can end without much fuss. The next bill is simply higher.

The "Could you save money on another plan?" box on your energy bill only compares that retailer's own plans. It can't tell you what other retailers charge.

Keeping it all in one place, with someone watching the prices for you, is what the free account is for.

What can you do in a free My Household account?

Keep your bills, your comparisons and your alerts together. You add what you pay once, and we keep watching the prices after you leave.

Save your household and services

Add your home and each service you pay for, then record what each bill costs you. One household is included free.

Upload a bill, we read the figures

Send a PDF, JPG or PNG of your bill and we read the figures for you. The account number, NMI and MIRN are masked before anything is saved.

Run saved comparisons again

Save a comparison and run it later to see what changed since last time. Save the plans you are weighing up too.

Email alerts that do the watching

Get an email when a saved plan's price changes, or when a cheaper match appears for your usage. Free accounts include five alerts.

See every recorded price change

Each alert sits on a full record: the old value, the new value and the date, for every plan we track.

How does tracking work once you sign up?

Five steps, and only the first two take any effort. After that the account checks prices for you.

  1. Create your account

Sign up free and add your household. We never ask for your account number.

  2. Add your services and what you pay

Type in the figures from each bill, or upload the bill and let us read them. Account numbers are masked before saving.

  3. Compare and save

Run a comparison using the plans retailers publish under the Consumer Data Right, checked every 24 hours. Save it, and save any plans you like. Comparison covers NSW, Victoria, Queensland, SA, Tasmania and the ACT, not WA or the NT.

  4. Turn on alerts

Choose up to five plans to watch. We email you when a price changes or a cheaper match appears for your usage.

  5. Run it again when prices move

Open a saved comparison and run it again to see exactly what changed, using the same usage as last time.

We never ask for your account number. When you upload a bill, we mask the account number, NMI and MIRN before anything is saved. You can download or delete everything, or your whole account, at any time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it really free?
Yes. Every comparison, calculator and the free account cost nothing. The free account covers one household and five alerts.
Do you need my account number?
No. If you upload a bill we mask the account number, NMI and MIRN before anything is saved, and you can delete the file or your whole account at any time.
How will I know when my price changes?
Save your plan in a free account and turn on alerts. We email you when its price changes or when a cheaper match appears for your usage.
Do I need an account to compare?
No. Enter your postcode and usage, or figures from a recent bill, and see the published plans for your area by yearly cost. An account is only for saving comparisons, recording bills and alerts.
What kind of bill can I upload?
A PDF, JPG or PNG. We read the figures for you so you don't have to type them in, and the account number, NMI and MIRN are masked before the file is saved.
Can I take my data with me or delete it?
Yes. You can download everything you've saved, or delete any file or your whole account, at any time. There's nothing to cancel and no one to call.
Why can't I compare electricity in WA or the NT?
Retailers there do not publish their plans through the national feed we use, so we can't show a complete, current list. The household, electricity, solar and battery calculators still work.
Do providers pay you to rank higher?
No. Results are ordered by estimated cost at your usage. We may be paid when you choose some plans, and any sponsored placement is labelled, but payment never changes the order. See How we make money at /tools/how-we-make-money/.
