Household bill calculators: every free tool and where to start
Every one of our household bill calculators is free. See what each asks for, what it gives back, and which one to open first.

Which tool should I start with?
Start with what you have. A recent bill means compare. No bill yet means the household cost calculator. Solar homes and battery shoppers each have their own route.
In WA or the NT? Plan comparison does not cover you yet, because retailers there do not publish their plans through the national feed. Every calculator still works for you.
- Bill in hand: Compare your electricity bill. Enter the figures from it and see the published plans for your postcode, ordered by estimated yearly cost. Gas comparison works the same way.
- No bill yet: Use the household cost calculator. Add each bill you pay and get one yearly total that shows where the money goes. Useful when you have just moved house.
- You have solar: Start with electricity plans for solar homes. The plan with the highest feed-in rate is not always the cheapest overall, so look at the whole yearly cost.
- Checking your feed-in rate: A feed-in tariff is what your retailer pays for the solar power you send to the grid. See the rates by state before you settle on a plan.
- Thinking about a battery: Open the battery payback calculator and work out payback for your own home. Every assumption can be changed, so you can try your own numbers.

Every household bill calculator we run, and what it gives back

From your bill to a yearly figure. Then we keep watching.
Comparing takes a postcode and a few numbers. Saving the result is optional, and only needed if you want alerts later.
Read your electricity bill line
Enter what you know
Your postcode and usage, or the figures from a recent bill. We never ask for your account number. Upload a bill and the account number, NMI and MIRN are masked before anything is saved.
See plans by yearly cost
Published plans for your area, ordered by estimated cost at your usage. The total includes GST, usage and the supply charge, the daily fee for being connected. Plans we can't cost reliably are marked less certain and listed last.
Check the discount maths
Conditional discounts, like pay on time or direct debit, stay out of the yearly cost unless you tick that you always meet them. Each plan also shows its cost if every condition is met.
Save it and get told
Create a free account to save the comparison and run it again later to see what changed. We email you when your plan's price changes or a cheaper match appears.
What does each tool need, and where does it work?
Plan comparison covers six states and territories. The calculators work anywhere in Australia. The account is for keeping track after you compare.
No account to compare, and payments never change the order
The questions people ask before they trust a comparison, answered the same way we answer them everywhere else.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Do I need an account to compare?
- No. Enter your postcode and usage, or figures from a recent bill, and see the published plans for your area by yearly cost. An account is only for saving comparisons, recording bills and alerts.
- Do providers pay you to rank higher?
- No. Results are ordered by estimated cost at your usage. We may be paid when you choose some plans, and any sponsored placement is labelled, but payment never changes the order. See How we make money at /tools/how-we-make-money/.
- Where do the prices come from?
- Electricity and gas plans come from the plans retailers must publish under the Consumer Data Right, hosted by the Australian Energy Regulator. We check them every 24 hours and every plan links to the retailer's own page.
- Why can't I compare electricity in WA or the NT?
- Retailers there do not publish their plans through the national feed we use, so we can't show a complete, current list. The household, electricity, solar and battery calculators still work.
- Do you need my account number?
- No. If you upload a bill we mask the account number, NMI and MIRN before anything is saved, and you can delete the file or your whole account at any time.
- Is it really free?
- Yes. Every comparison, calculator and the free account cost nothing. The free account covers one household and five alerts.
